Las Vegas to Reno Road Trip

Start your journey with a visit to Red Rock Canyon, which is just a short drive from Las Vegas. This conservation area is best known for its namesake stunning red sandstone formations, scenic drives, and numerous hiking trails, and the 13-mile Scenic Loop offers breathtaking views and several spots where you can pull over to enjoy the scenery. This is also a great place to stretch your legs and take in the natural beauty before hitting the road again.

A little over an hour’s drive from Las Vegas, Pahrump is a great place to stop if you’d like to explore some of the best wineries in the country. Be sure to stop by the Pahrump Valley Winery for a wine tasting session or simply explore the town’s charming small-town vibe. It isn’t all about wine, though, and if you’re a motorsport enthusiast, a visit to the Spring Mountain Motor Resort is a must, which offers various driving experiences.

As you head west, a slight detour will take you to Death Valley Junction, which is home to the historic Amargosa Opera House and Hotel. This unique destination offers a glimpse into the area’s artistic and cultural heritage, and you’ll find murals and information about performances that reflect the local history and folklore, making it a fascinating stop for art and history buffs.

Located right at the edge of Death Valley National Park, Beatty is a gateway to one of the hottest places on Earth. This small town offers attractions like the Beatty Museum and Historical Society, where you can learn about the region’s mining history. The nearby Goldwell Open Air Museum is another must-visit while you’re in the area, where you’ll find an eclectic collection of outdoor sculptures, offering a quirky and Instagram-worthy stop on your journey.

Continuing north, Tonopah is a historic mining town located halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. The Tonopah Historic Mining Park offers an immersive experience into the town’s mining past with restored buildings and equipment, and another intriguing spot is the Clown Motel, which is known for its extensive collection of clown memorabilia. Tonopah is also famous for its incredibly dark skies, making it the perfect stop for stargazers who would like to spend the night looking to the heavens.

As you progress towards Reno and land just north of Hawthorne, Walker Lake offers stunning views and a peaceful retreat from the road. The lake is a remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan and is a great spot for birdwatching, fishing, and boating. The dramatic scenery also provides a perfect photo opportunity and a moment of tranquility before continuing your drive.

A brief stop in Schurz offers a chance to visit the Walker River Paiute Tribe’s lands; an area rich in Native American history where you can learn more about the Paiute culture and heritage. The tribal lands here are also home to the beautiful Walker River, which provides opportunities for fishing and photography.

Yerington is a small agricultural town with a charming downtown area that is just begging to be explored. The Lyon County Museum, in particular, offers insights into the local history, and nearby, you can visit Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area, a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. This stop also provides a pleasant break from the desert scenery with its lush, green landscapes.

A bit further north, Fort Churchill State Historic Park is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The fort was built in 1861 to protect early settlers and is now a preserved ruin, but the park still offers hiking, and picnicking opportunities, along with a visitor center where you can learn about the fort’s role in Nevada’s history.

As you near Reno, Dayton is a historical gem with a rich mining heritage, and the town is one of Nevada’s oldest settlements that offers several historical sites, including the Dayton Museum and the Rock Point Mill. Dayton State Park, located along the Carson River, also provides recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and picnicking, giving you a chance to take a break from driving and relax in beautiful surroundings.

A short detour from Dayton will take you to Virginia City, a well-preserved 19th-century mining town. This living ghost town is famous for its historic buildings, wooden boardwalks, and the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. While you’re here, be sure to visit the Mark Twain Museum to learn about the famous author’s time in Virginia City or take a mine tour to get a sense of the mining life during the Comstock Lode era.

Before reaching Reno, take the time to stop by Nevada’s capital, Carson City. The city offers a variety of attractions, including the Nevada State Museum, which houses exhibits on the state’s natural and cultural history. The Nevada State Capitol, built in the 1870s, is another must-see, offering tours that provide insights into Nevada’s government and history. Or, for outdoor enthusiasts, the nearby Lake Tahoe offers stunning scenery and numerous recreational activities.

You’ve just reached your final destination! Reno, known as “The Biggest Little City in the World” offers a vibrant arts scene, numerous casinos, and a variety of outdoor activities. Highlights here include a visit to the Nevada Museum of Art or a stroll along the Truckee Riverwalk, and for a taste of Reno’s eclectic culture, explore the Midtown District with its unique shops, cafes, and street art.
